Computer Vision Syndrome

Overview

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), also known as Digital Eye Strain, is a group of vision- and eye-related problems caused by prolonged use of digital devices such as computers, tablets, and smartphones. With increasing screen time in today’s lifestyle, CVS has become one of the most common eye conditions, affecting both adults and children.

Causes
  • Prolonged screen exposure without breaks
  • Poor lighting or glare on digital screens
  • Improper viewing distance and posture
  • Reduced blinking while using screens
  • Use of incorrect eyeglass prescriptions
Symptoms
  • Eye strain or discomfort
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Dry eyes, burning, or irritation
  • Headaches
  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain
  • Difficulty focusing on distant objects after screen use
Diagnosis
  • Detailed medical and lifestyle history
  • Comprehensive eye examination
  • Assessment of refractive error and focusing ability
  • Evaluation of tear film stability for dry eye detection
Treatment
  • Lifestyle modifications - following the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds)
  • Corrective glasses - with or without blue-light filtering lenses if required
  • Proper workstation setup - correct posture, screen height, and ambient lighting
  • Lubricating eye drops - to relieve dryness and irritation
  • Specialty glasses - computer-specific lenses for extended screen use
